Manufacturer Introduces 'Green' Serta Crib Mattress

LaJobi Industries, Inc., a designer, manufacturer and distributor of baby furniture, recently unveiled what it is billing as the first environmentally friendly Serta crib mattress. Named Serta's Perfect Balance, the new addition to the Serta Baby mattress line is distributed by New Jersey-based LaJobi and is available exclusively at Babies "R" Us, a national baby-products retailer.

"Today's product-development trends are focused on reexamining and redefining the relationship between the consumer and the environment," said President Larry Bivona of LaJobi Industries. "We are very proud to distribute the first Serta eco-friendly crib mattress and believe that a mattress designed with both baby and the environment in mind will be a welcome addition to any nursery."

Made with organic cotton fill, the mattress was designed to offer comfort and durability, Bivona said. It features continuous heavy coils, "flex mesh" support and six-gauge border wire. A heavily laminated cover – made without controversial Phthalates chemical compounds – protects against dust mites and bacteria, he added, while eight air vents help keep the mattress fresh while providing a safe sleeping surface.

The crib mattress, which also fits a toddler bed, retails for $199.99.

Safer Sleep for Baby

Many crib-mattress materials can cause allergies, asthma and even developmental harm. Polyvinylchloride; polyurethane foam, formaldehyde; flame-retardants; and water-, stain- and wrinkle resistant chemicals dissipate over time, but they can accumulate in household dust and still be inhaled
