I learned that organizing a twins’ nursery can be a fun project, but it also takes a lot of planning and strategizing.This week Mandy and I will share with you our tips and advice for creating the perfect nursery for your twin bundles of joy.Below is my plan for tackling the challenge and making room for 2. While working on my babies’ nursery, a few things were especially important for me: safety, functionality, fun, and cost efficiency (I am big on saving money anywhere and anyway I can!).

Here is my advice on how to accomplish this:

Plan early
I started planning the nursery as soon as we found out we were having 2 boys. Based on my experience, I do recommend that you start organizing everything early. With a twin pregnancy, there is a chance that you could be placed on bed rest or even hospitalized so you may not have the opportunity to shop for nursery items and decorate the room by yourself. If you don’t run into any complications, I can almost guarantee that you will be exhausted in the late stages of your pregnancy, so hanging up pictures and ironing curtains will not seem like a dream activity to you.

Decide which room or space in your home will serve as a twins’ nursery
We picked a small spare bedroom that was previously used as an office. The office was already painted blue. This color worked great for the nursery, so we did not even have to paint the room! I was happy to save time and money.

Decide on the décor
I am not a big fan of the nursery themes. In my opinion, it is more fun for the parents (especially moms to be) to design super cute rooms for their babies. Nothing wrong with that, I actually enjoy seeing other people’s theme nurseries, but personally I will wait until my kids are old enough to express what they really want their room to look like. Besides, all the theme accessories are very expensive and some of them are not useful or functional. I feel similarly about buying expensive nursery furniture sets. It is very pricey and not always useful when the kids are older. So W and D nursery is simple but warm and colorful.

Establish your budget
How much do you want to spend on your nursery? I decided that I didn’t want to spend more that $500 total. I know a few people who organized great nurseries for less than that, but most of my friends were shaking their heads in disbelieve saying that $500 will not even buy me 2 nice cribs. So let me tell you that it does buy more than 2 nice cribs and I will show you how I did it.Shop smartMake a list of must have items for your nursery and decide which ones you are going to buy and which you will register for.This step is a key to saving money. I decided not to buy or register for any expensive baby furniture sets. I focused on finding perfect and inexpensive cribs and changing station. I also did not buy crib sheet sets (I did not use bumpers and found comforters not useful or safe for babies). Besides, they are very pricey and all I really needed is 4 crib sheets. I did not buy any wall paintings, because we decided that we would use boys’ photographs as nursery artwork.I also planned carefully for what I registered for. I registered for only the items that I was absolutely sure I would need. My cribs were the most expensive product that I registered for @ $142 each. As a result, I received most of the nursery items as gifts from generous friends and family.

So here is my list of must have items for twins’ nursery:

2 cribs - Babi Italia Nursery 101 Crib – $142 per crib (we received them as a gift, so $0 cost to us). They are plain and simple but also very nice looking and good quality.

2 mattresses – Serta Nightstar - $79 per mattress (we received them as a gift, so $0 cost to us)

Changing station (or a comfortable place to change diapers and dress your babies) –Nursery 101 Concord Dressing Table – $79. My changing station matches our cribs. It is good quality and for safety reasons I like that you can install a changing pad securely in place. I also like the storage room underneath. It is easier for me to find onesies or socks in the small baskets rather that search in dresser drawers.

Storage room for clothes, baby gear and other accessories: you can use a closet, a dresser, storage baskets, or bookshelves. Be creative. Don’t think that an expensive dresser is the only solution when trying to build a nursery on a budget. Besides the closet space I used storage baskets. I bought them from different stores and also reused a couple that I already had – total cost ~ $ 50

Night light – I used the Kinderglo Moon - $25. When I purchased this nightlight, I did not realize how useful it would be in our house. I love it because you can charge it and take it with you anywhere in the house! The light is not too bright but strong enough to see when you are changing diapers in the middle of the night. Kinderglo has 2 settings (30 minutes or 8 hours) it also has 5 different light colors. The moon shape is super cute and I think it will also work great when the boys are older.

Humidifier – I used Crane Adorable Cool Mist Humidifier - $40. This humidifier has the word “adorable” in its name. I do agree that it is well-earned! It is adorable and works very well.

Monitor - Sony Baby Call Nursery Monitor ~$35 (we received them as a gift so $0 cost to us)

Couch, guest bed or a glider (a place for you to sit, lie down or relax while spending time in the nursery). We reused our fairly new loveseat that was already in this room. It was also a great place to sit while feeding the babies.Bookcase – we reused the one that was already in the office.

2 cribs mobiles - we used Fisher-Price Rainforest Mobile and Ocean Mobile - ~$45 (we received them as a gift so $0 cost to us)

Window treatments - we already had blinds installed in the room and I just purchased 2 kids valances on clearance at Target for ~$6 each.

Rug – if you don’t have a carpet in your nursery I recommend getting a rug to make a soft place for crawling babies and more cozy play area. We used the rug that we already had in the room. It matched the loveseat so it was a good solution.

Wall decals – Transportation Peel & Stick – $9.99. They added nice colorful touch to the room. They are very inexpensive and you can easily remove them at any time.

Final results:We originally placed the cribs side by side with few feet of space in between them. Than we realized that placing them in this corner type of setting saves room and also gives boys opportunity to interact. They can stand almost next to each other and “talk” which they do quite often lately :)Changing table with storage baskets and loveseat and the rug. We play a lot on the rug and next to the loveseat. Unfortunately, W and D recently figured out that it is a lot of fun to take stuff out if the storage baskets and spread it across the room. I will have to make different arrangements for the clothes and fill up the baskets with their toys.

I was checking out some of the product lines that Inspired Nursery works with. One of them is Bonavita (www.Bonavita.com). Oh my! I wish they had crib sets like this when my children were babies. I absolutely love the convertible crib sets. Those are the ones that go from a crib, to a toddler bed and eventually they turn into a full size grown up bed. You just need the one bed set to take your child from infancy to adulthood. Talk about getting your moneys worth.I love the Sheffield Lifestyle Crib. It’s so pretty! Another company is Babi Italia (www.BabiItalia.com). Oh my! Check out this beautiful Glider Cradle.I REALLY could have used this for our son when he was an infant. He had the worst colic in the world and constantly had to be kept moving or he’d scream his head off. This went on every day from around 5:00 PM to approximately 1:00 AM for around 4-5 months. It was a nightmare. If we had a Glider Cradle I bet it would have helped us out a lot. It would be much easier to gently push the cradle back and forth compared to walking around our home bouncing him up and down. I have never seen, or even heard of a Glider Cradle before. I had a Glider Chair when my daughter was an infant. They are really nice.

The Kathy Ireland Home nursery collection features four groups: Southern Splendor, Pilgrimage, Pennsylvania and Princess Garden. Buying a crib mattress is usually a last-minute afterthought. Let’s be honest, it’s not as glamorous as the crib’s design or as high profile as the car seat – but shouldn’t it be? Many longstanding baby products have been rethought and redesigned because they contain chemicals (BPA, PVC, phthalates, etc.) that are now considered dangerous. As of February 10, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CSPIA) banned certain varieties of phthalates from crib mattresses (most notably found in standard vinyl coverings) after evidence linked them to endocrine system problems and possibly cancer. And the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reported that phthalates could cause more damage to babies than adults because their bodies are still developing.

The following mattresses all adhere to the government’s new standards, and most go above and beyond, eliminating vinyl coverings altogether. Keep in mind that some of these substitutions require spray treatments to keep them wet and stain-resistant, and other mattresses require a mattress pad to keep odor, dust mites and bacteria from creeping in over time. Use your discretion as to how “natural” you’re comfortable with, but have peace of mind that the mattresses in this guide (including the runners up!) are safe choices for your little one. Some might have a higher price tag than the norm, but most have been modified with organic and/or naturally derived products so both you and your baby can sleep better at night.

MANTUA TWP. Most moms count on the loving support of family members and the generosity of a baby shower to help them welcome a new little one into the world.

But at eight-months pregnant and living on McGuire Air Force Base for the past seven months, Staff Sgt. April Halloway said she doesn't have that opportunity this time around.

Halloway, who is a month away from delivering her third child, said she was "like a kid in a candy store" Thursday morning when she and her husband came to a Gloucester County College building on Blackwood-Barnsboro Road to pick up a brand new crib, changing table and bedding for their new addition.

"We think this is great," Halloway said as she carried the bedding out to her husband who was waiting in their car.

The couple, and many other military couples, families, and wives whose husbands are still serving abroad, traveled to Mantua Township Thursday morning to pick up the donations.

The support was organized by Operation Homefront, which collaborated with LaJobi Inc, of Cranbury, and CoCaLo, of California Êtwo companies who donated the furniture and bedding.

There were 200 cribs, 200 changing tables, and bedding for all of it, stacked up in the empty garage space at the former Gloucester County parks and recreation building.

Men and women in fatigues, and moms holding baby carriers and toddlers hands, worked steadily to move the furniture into vehicles.

It's eased the burden for the LaRaia family, of Mount Holly. Kelly LaRaia said her husband Thomas is serving in Iraq with the 87th civil engineering squadron and won't be home until May. They have two daughters, two-year-old Aurora, and seven-month-old Aine. LaRaia was picking up a crib and table for the baby, and one for another military family who just had a baby the night before.

"It's 24 hours a day, every day, taking care of two kids by myself," LaRaia said of the struggle being on her own while Thomas is abroad.

Tracy Handschuh, chapter president of Operation Homefront New York/New Jersey, said the organization is happy to help out, especially knowing that some 3,000 veterans returned in the spring.

"It's so exciting to see all these new moms to be," Handschuh said as she watched the families load up their cars. For many of them, the fathers are away, and even when they return, they have financial issues to worry about, not to mention adjusting to civilian life.

"This is one less thing they have to worry about," she said.

Military families pick up donated cribs, changing tables thanks to Operation Homefront

MANTUA TWP. — The khaki fatigues didn’t do much to hide Staff Sgt. Apil Halloway’s pregnant belly Thursday morning as she and her husband came to pick up a new crib, changing table and bedding for their third child.

The baby’s due in just about one month and Halloway, who’s stationed at McGuire Airforce Base, admits she isn’t totally prepared.

Luckily, Operation Homefront was standing by, giving out more than 200 cribs, 200 changing tables and bedding for both to dozens of military families on Thursday. The furniture was donated by LaJobi Inc, of Cranbury, and CoCaLo, of California. The pick-up was at the Gloucester County College building on Blackwood-Barnsboro Road, which used to be a county parks and recreation building.

“The economy has hit military families just like the rest of our country,” said Tracy Handschuh, chapter president of Operation Homefront New York/New Jersey. “Nationwide, Operation Homefront saw a 179 percent increase from 2008 to 2009 in requests for food assistance, so we know our military families are struggling to meet the most basic of needs.”

Providing furniture for the families gives them one less thing to worry about, Handschuh said.

My daughter is now 7 months old and this is the changing table we have been using since her birth. We chose this changing table because it came is espresso (to match her crib) and it was relatively inexpensive.

The height is perfect for both my husband and I, I am 5′5″ and he is 5′11″ This table is on rollers which was really nice, we started off with it in the bedroom and then after a few weeks just wheeled it into the nursery when we were ready to put her in her crib for the night. There is plenty of shelf room, I have three wicker baskets with socks and shoes stored on them, plus extra diapering supplies.

For the price I am really happy with this changing table. I don’t feel I would have benefited anymore from spending 0 on a “fancy” one. It doesn’t look cheap compared to the rest of her furniture, and serves it purpose so I give it 5 stars!

The baby crib and nursery furniture is certainly one of the most exciting purchases you will make for your new baby. Your baby will have their furniture for most of their childhood, so you want to select the best crib and furniture set your budget can afford.

Of course, a crib’s safety is the number one consideration when you’re making a purchase – especially in light of the massive crib recalls that have been making news lately.

Crib Safety
When shopping for a new crib, look for one that meets or exceeds JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association) standards and is JPMA-certified. The JPMA has certified more than 2,000 products in 17 different categories.

Safe baby cribs meet the following criteria:

Crib slats or spindles should be no more than 2 3/8” apart. (You should not be able to fit a soda can between the slats). Spindles or slats should not be loose or missing.

Hardware is sturdy, not bent or rusted.

The crib mattress should fit snugly, with no more than one inch between the edge of the mattress and the side of the crib.

No “cutout” areas on the headboard or footboard, where an infant’s head may get trapped.

No splinters or rough edges.

Crib should not have corner posts taller than 1/16 of an inch, as a baby’s clothes can get caught on these posts, posing a strangulation hazard.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission recommends that parents should not use secondhand cribs manufactured prior to 1978. The CPSC safety standards for cribs changed in1974, while standards for lead paint use changed in 1978. You can find out more about secondhand crib safety here.

Type of Crib
Most people decorate their baby’s nursery in a style that matches the rest of their house, whether that is modern/contemporary, traditional, shabby chic, French Colonial, etc. Once you decide on a style, you can select from many different crib designs.

Canopy crib (Posts should be over 16” high).

Convertible Crib
Another factor to consider is convertibility: Do you want a crib that will turn into a toddler bed and, later, a day bed or full-size bed for your child? Or do you plan to use the crib for a second child and buy a new toddler bed and, finally, a twin or loft bed? Convertible cribs cost a bit more, so if you plan to use the crib only as a baby crib, it makes sense to buy one that doesn’t convert.

Additionally, some people say that less expensive convertible cribs, even converted into full-size beds or day beds, still look like cribs. For this reason, if you can’t afford a higher-end convertible crib, you may decide against buying convertible at all.

A Word on Dropside Cribs
Dropside cribs – cribs which have sides that drop down for easy access to baby – have been cited as safety hazards lately, following the recall of two different popular brands from two manufacturers.
Toys R Us has stopped selling drop-side cribs in Suffolk County, New York. The CPSC is calling for a nationwide ban on drop-side cribs. For that reason, we cannot, in good conscience, recommend drop-side cribs as a buying option.

Finish/Color
When you pick a finish for your wood crib, keep in mind your nursery’s décor. Conventional wisdom says not to use darker woods in small spaces, but today’s designers say this is no longer true. You can go with a chocolate, espresso, or classic cherry finish in a small nursery, providing you use light, bright colors on walls and carpeting to open the space.

Matching Pieces
What nursery pieces will you want in addition to a baby crib? Barbara Rogers of LaJobi, manufacturer of brands such as Nursery 101, Graco, Bonavita, Babi Italia, Europa Baby and ISSI, says, “The three main pieces of furniture you need are a crib, a place to change the baby, and a place to store the baby’s clothes.”

Do you like the looks of the matching dresser and changing table? Does the product line come with a variety of options? Does the set come with a matching nightstand, chest of drawers or armoire, so the furniture really will grow with your child?

Measurements
Will the crib, plus changing table and dresser or armoire, fit well in the nursery? Measure before you buy. Don’t squeeze more into a small space than you really need. Many dressers can double as changing tables. You can also get additional storage space with a trundle drawer under the crib.

A rocking chair is a nice addition to a nursery – if it fits. If not, consider putting a rocker/glider in your own bedroom or in a den or living room.

Price
Since baby cribs can range in price from $100 to thousands, it’s important to decide how much you want to spend. Price is not necessarily an indicator of quality or safety. For instance, Rogers of LaJobi says, “All our cribs, from the less expensive Nursery 101 line to La BonaVita models, exceed JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturing Association Standards.) You can get perfectly safe, well-made cribs for $200 or less.

So what’s the difference between less expensive and more expensive baby cribs?

Less expensive cribs usually require assembly.

Less expensive cribs may have fewer options for different finishes and styles.

Less expensive cribs may have fewer choices for matching furniture pieces.

The coordinating furniture for more expensive cribs may look more like “adult” furniture, and will last into your child’s teen years – or beyond.

The detail work on more expensive cribs may be nicer.

More expensive cribs may be manufactured from solid wood and be sturdier.

Questions to Ask Before You Buy a Crib

What is the décor of your home?

What colors will you decorate your nursery?

Do you want a convertible crib or do you plan to use the crib for a second baby?

What other furniture pieces do you need for the nursery?

Would you like a trundle drawer beneath the crib for additional storage?

What kind of wood or materials is the crib made of? Is it a less expensive, ready-to-assemble crib, which may use pressboard instead of solid wood? If it’s solid, what kind of wood is it?

How many height adjustment levels does the crib have? Some cribs allow three different height adjustments for the mattress – a higher, “bassinet height” for infants who can’t yet roll over, a mid-height for babies who can roll over but not yet stand, and the lowest height, for toddlers who can stand (and climb!)

How sturdy is the crib? Does it pass the “shake test” in the store? Denise and Alan Fields, authors of the book Baby Bargains, share a tip in the 8th edition of their book. Sometimes, retailers will actually leave screws loose in the less expensive crib and changing table models, so they appear to be less sturdy than their pricier counterparts.

When you’re looking at cribs in a retail store, it pays to check the hardware. You might even bring a small Phillips head screwdriver and tighten loose screws, that way you can get a fair comparison between cribs of different price points.

What is the company’s reputation and recall history? Has the crib you are looking at ever been recalled? What was the problem and how was it fixed?

LaJobi moves to larger space

LIVE FROM ABC – LaJobi has moved into a larger booth here to spotlight its growing collections.

“We have so much to offer,” said Barbara Rogers, director of marketing and product development. “We have so many case pieces, we went from a 3,000- to 4,500-sq.-ft. booth.”

Debuting here are the Graco Avalon glider and ottoman and the Graco Charleston crib and dressing table. These two collections join others LaJobi has added this year.

Francais has a Lifestyle Crib in antique cream. Case goods are antique cream with a Charleston cherry top and include a five-drawer, small chest, double dresser and nightstand.

“Francais is inspired by an antique collection that looks like someone pulled it out of Grandma’s attic,” said Rogers. “The (case good) tops are distressed and knobs are acrylic.”

Seaside is a transitional, casual collection with baskets in the case pieces in place of the top two drawers. Available in dark walnut or classic white, the collection includes a Lifestyle Crib, five-drawer, double dresser and nightstand.

“People decorate their nursery like they decorate the rest of their house,” said Rogers.

The Shelby Collection features an island crib.

“You can use it in an apartment or smaller home, and it can be put in the middle of the room,” said Rogers. “It has stationary sides and is in compliance with safety regulations, and the rails are shorter for a petite person.”

Nursery 101 is a new brand that launched in June, offering an opening price point.

“It’s targeted to people above the $25k income,” said Rogers. It came about based on research from Mintel, which showed population shifts and the Hispanic market with the fastest growth in birth rates.

“They want beautiful furniture that is quality, but not a high price point,” she said. A package called Baby Room Basics retails at $179 for a crib and changer. Nursery 101 also includes a four-drawer dresser and two other case goods.

You can create a stylish baby nursery with less cost than ever, thanks to these great baby cribs under $250.

1. Baby Mod Cadence 4-in-1 Crib
Baby Mod is a division of Million Dollar Baby, a company that sells cribs in higher price ranges at specialty stores. Baby Mod's Cadence crib has all of the style and durability of a higher-priced crib, but it costs less than $250. Rolled edges on the front and back rail, plus curvy, detailed wood on the legs give this crib an elegant look. The Cadence crib is available in four finishes and has four mattress height positions. The toddler bed rail is included with this crib (it's a separate purchase for many cribs) and you can also convert it to a day bed and headboard / footboard (bed rails or frame needed). No drop sides.

2. Graco Dakota Classic Crib
Eco-friendly cribs are quite popular now, but usually the prices are a bit high for budget shoppers. The Graco Dakota Classic Crib offers an eco-friendly option for about $200, though. All of the wooden components are from sustainable forests and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council through the Rainforest Alliance Smartwood Program. The dark finish is water-based and even the packaging is made from recycled or recyclable materials. The crib has three mattress height positions, caster wheels, and converts to a day bed, toddler bed and full-size headboard. No drop sides.

3. DwellStudio Silver Lake Crib
If you're looking for a sleek, modern crib at a budget price, the DwellStudio Silver Lake crib offers straight white slats flanked by contrasting light or dark wood end rails. Two drawers underneath have heavy-duty metal slides, which is a nice touch at this price range. The crib has three mattress height positions and is made of solid wood. No drop sides. Converts to a full-size bed. About $250.

4. Graco Shelby Classic Convertible Crib
This stationary crib has pretty details on the sides that mimic high-end baby furniture. The Graco Shelby Classic 4-in-1 Crib has rolled, sleigh-like sides on top, and features three mattress height positions and a lower profile that makes it easier to reach in to pick up your baby. This crib converts to a toddler bed, day bed and full-size headboard (bed rails or bed frame needed). It's available in a dark cappuccino finish and costs about $230. No drop sides.

5. StorkCraft Meaghan Baby Crib
The side rails of the StorkCraft Meaghan crib are sleigh-style with rolled edges, while the back rail is gracefully arched to create a beautiful focal point for baby's nursery. Sleek but classic sleigh curves add interest to this crib from Dream On Me. Three mattress heights allow for growing room, while caster wheels and a single drop-side give parents an easier time in the nursery. You can convert this crib to a day bed easily. Five finishes are available, including white, black and wood tones.

8. Graco Sarah Baby Crib
Another 4 in 1 crib, the Graco Sarah crib converts to a toddler bed, day bed and headboard for a full size bed, but has a great low price. The roll top rails on the head and foot boards add a pretty touch, as do the curved corner pieces, while the straight slats look sleek and classic.
